Full Moon Gathering for Women

Mother Moon 3 Comments »

NEW!!!! Previously our gatherings have been traditionally followed by light snacks for celebration.  This does add length to our gatherings and can be quite late for some to ingest food, therefore many have been choosing to opt out.  As a result there we will no longer share food among us, we will however, enjoy a nice cup of  tea together!

The moon is a symbol of the feminine, the unconscious, and the intuitive. In ancient times women’s cycles were aligned with the moon: ovulation during the full moon and menstruation during the dark of the moon. The full moon also completes the moon cycle, which represents death, change, or tying up loose ends.  It also symbolizes the end of a chapter, shedding light on the things that we no longer need to hold on to.  Our gatherings are a way for us to connect to body, mind and spirit and to unlock the immense vitality which is our birthright as women.  In our monthly gatherings we explore yoga movements, smudging, mantras & mudras, writing exercises and simply be a part of a sharing circle with other women.

We began gathering together in September 2009 and have had the joy of many different women coming through our circle in various numbers.  The gatherings are open to all levels of female yogi’s (yogini) and spirituality.  Some of the yoga philosophies that will be shared are: Pranayama (breathwork), Mantra yoga (song or chant) and Hand Mudras (hand gestures).  In addition we take the power of one of our great mother’s to bring all our wishes and desires into a reality.  See Manifesting with the Moon

So please bring along a friend if you like and join us as we move, go inward and breathe deeply in the loving presence of the Divine Feminine of Mother Moon. You will leave these evenings feeling spiritually nourished, physically and emotionally rejuvenated and remembering who you truly are….

 Gathering Agenda

Beginning our evenings together we always start with an opening circle to introduce ourselves and invite our significant female influences to share the space with us.  We then perform a cermonial purification practice (Indigenous smudging or similar) and then go into our Yoga Offering to Mother Moon.  Following our yoga and meditation we will then do a simple writing exercise enhancing our creative mind and then perform a purging ceremony to release the stuff (thoughts, things, people, etc) that no longer serves our highest good.

Moontime or Cycle:  If you are experiencing your “moon time” or “cycle” during the particular day of the gathering, it is recommended that you do not actively participate in the indigenous ceremonies that we will performing with medicines. The indigenous peoples believe that during this time, women are in ceremony with the moon and already in the purification process. Of course this does by any stretch mean that you cannot stay present and offer support to your sisters.  Yoga philosophies also have beliefs around moontime as well, please see Yoga & Menstruation for more information.

*Also, please familiarize yourself with the Beginner’s Guide to Yoga and fill out the Participation Form to bring to the gathering (if you haven’t done this before).

Time:

  • 6:30pm to 7:30pm – Opening circle, smudge, sharing & Yoga (drop-ins for just yoga is permitted)

Summer Yoga
Welcome to summer!  For some of us the term ‘lazy days of summer’ simply does not exist.  We wait all spring to spend more time outside to get a bit of color and catch up on our outdoor projects that have been waiting and usually this means putting our yoga on the back burner until the fall. There is always a compromise!  I get not wanting to be indoors!  But how about combining the two?  I don’t have to tell you how beneficial Yoga is for you and how it’s a great injury prevention when you start to move more (ie. bending & squatting over a garden or painting a fence).  Find a nice spot outside and incorporate a few yoga postures you like.  You know it’s good for you AND you can do as much or as little as you like, the point is: KEEP MOVING and keep the muscles flexible and limber so we don’t start all over in the fall :) .Here’s a little blurbie that I wrote last summer about your home yoga practice  to get you started.  Have a wonderful summer and I really do hope to continue to see over the summer whether it’s yoga, dance or hiking!!!Metta (in loving kindness)Robin

Posture of the Month

MALASANA (mal–asana), otherwise known as Garland or Squat Pose.

Level: All
Benefits:

  • Opens the hips, groins, back & torso
  • Stretches the ankles & calves

How To:

  • Squat with your feet wide, heels in toes out if possible. *Keep your heels on the floor if you can; otherwise, support them on a folded mat. This is better than trying to balance on the balls of your feet!
  • Press your elbows against your inner knees, bringing your palms to together in Namaste.
  • Roll the shoulders back to maintain a straight spine
  • To increase the stretch Press the elbows more into the knees.
  • Hold for at least 1 minute, to come out slowly stand up.

Cautions:  low back or knee injuries

Variations: If squatting is difficult, sit on the front edge of a chair seat, thighs forming a right angle to your torso, heels on the floor slightly ahead of your knees. Lean your torso forward between the thighs.
