Yoga Shimmy???

Yoga Shimmy is a fun fusion of Hatha Yoga and introductory / beginner level Belly Dance instruction.  It is designed to introduce you to the basics of belly dance while enjoying the benefits of a body, mind & spirit connection through yoga and it’s philosophies.

Our untailored agenda will take us through a yoga warm-up and stretch, fun belly dance movements and a yummy yoga cool down with a guided meditation.

Classes are Friday mornings at 9:30 – 11:00am.  No prior experience in either belly dance or yoga required!

Please register at robin@theomtree.com – space is limited.

Hilwi – Jr. Oriental Dance

I  have been teaching youth belly dance since 2007 and I feel that calling them “juniors” sort of deludes what we are trying to accomplish by incorporating dance in their lives, which is why I chose to call them Hilwi.

What is Hilwi? When translated to english it means “pretty” or “sweet”. Oriental Dance is another term used in belly dance land in an effort to reduce the negative connotations attached to the term ‘belly dance”. Unfortunately, when Hollywood explored the art of belly dance it became somewhat seen as something ‘provocative’ or ‘seductive’. This is grossly incorrect. As a matter of fact in it’s birthplace of the Middle East, dance was primarliy peformed at family gatherings and celebrations.

Each girl is unique and special and using awareness of the body helps them to bring in positive feelings, feelings of beauty and creativity which are essential as they begin to embark on their journeys into womanhood.

I find the greatest joy in guiding young girls is being witness to the transformations that occur as they become comfortable and aware of their own body.  Regardless of shape or size, learning to control and move the body brings an amazing sense of self-esteem, confidence and not to mention wonder and appreciation!

Oriental dance is close and dear to my heart as much as yoga, and to have the honor in sharing it with the women of our future is so incredibly rewarding, it really is beyond words!
